Cervical abrasion in permanent teeth among Koreans has been increased recently. Highly abrasive dentifrices are injurious to individuals with exposed cementum and dentin. Accordingly, the abrasivity of dentifrice has to prevent brown pellicle accumulation with the least degree of abrasion. The purpose of this study were to obtain basic data on the distribution of optimal relative dentifrice abrasivity in Koreans. 400 Koreans aged 6 through 17 and 400 Koreans aged 20 through 60 were selected by cluster and ultimately 40 Koreans aged 20 through 60 were analyzed. Dentifrices were categorized with 5 grade according to relative dentifrice abrasivity ; 1st grade(low), 2nd grade, 3rd grade(medium), 4th grade, 5th grade(high). To determine optimal relative dentifrice abrasivity, modified trial and error approach of Robinson¢¥s was used. Brown pellicle of the 12 anterior teeth was observed with good illumination.
The results obtained were as follows
1. The percentage of persons needed 1st grade abrasive-dentifrice was 35.0%, the percentage of persons needed 2nd grade abrasive-dentifrice was 52.5% and the percentage of persons needed 3rd grade abrasive-dentifrice was 12.5%.
2. The critical relative dentifrice abrasivity of aged 20 through 39 was higher than that of aged 40 through 60(P<0.05).
3. The critical relative dentifrice abrasivity of man was higher than that of woman(P<0.05).
